e-Maintenance for multi-functional device (MFD).

In handling day to day operation in the office especially the multi-functional devices, we could be faced with any of the following scenarios:

·        Figure 1 - The above four scenarios were presented to UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd by Canon for the purpose of eliminating wastages in term of downtime due to error, run out of consumables, manual counter reading by users and lastly records of usage that required manual monitoring.
With the introduction of technology the above problems could easily be solved. e-Maintenance is a solution that allows an entity to take complete control of all the MFD’s devices. Whilst simultaneously reducing administration burdens, increasing up-time for their printers and copiers, and helping organization to optimise the productivity for the MFD’s equipment.

·        Figure 2 – From the process of detecting error, to calling the centre, feedback and solving the problems all through e-maintenance.

Key Features for the e-maintenance:

a)    Proactive Service -Problems can be predicted (Preventive Maintenance)

b)    Consumables - Arrives as you need them, reduced toner inventory

c)    Automatic counter reading - Accurate and timely billing

d)    Automatic fault monitoring and reporting - Technicians will be dispatched as and
      when required.

E-Maintenance simplified flow being depicted in the following image:

·        Figure 3 – Translated the remotes service monitor that provides information about MFDs status, error notifications and statistics about parts lifetime and consumables, as well as remote meter reading. These services use the same technology eRDS (i.e. embedded Remote Diagnostic System) to capture device information and transmit such information to a Canon server via the Internet, where it is accessible by the service provider via a web interface UGW (Universal Gateway).

With the support of technology the organization and its users could benefited as follows:

a)    Optimization of Devices

b)    Transparency of Device Performance

c)    Improved Up-time

d)    Automated and Cost Effective Meter Readings

e)    Proactive but not Intrusive

f)     Remote Fleet Management (include toner stock locations)
